Winnning Lot #8 Cup of Excellence 2010
Nyabumera and West Hills Coffee is the cutting edge for specialty coffee in Rwanda. The operation is headed by Simeon Ngendahayo - a very intelligent and forward thinking botanist intent on retaining his group of farmers as the leaders in Specialty Coffee for Rwanda. They have a handful of small mills instead of one big wet mill for processing cherries. This ensures the cherries are processed immediately after harvesting and also gives them the ability to process micro-lots according to altitude and area. Micro-lots are not common at all in Rwanda and through some miracle, we have been able to become their closest overseas partner.
The lots for the 2012 season are due to arrive in October 2012 and they have great potential. We received some type samples in June 2012 and the quality is looking good for the mid season pickings. The true samples are on the way in August 2012, and we look forward to picking the best of the batches for our customers.
We also are committed to supporting the Operation Open Heart project in Rwanda. This is our social commitment to the community. In Rwanda, they lack the appropriate doctors to perform delicate heart surgery, so they accrue a list of all the surgeries that need tending to for up to two years. Then, a team of Doctors from here in Australia is sent over to perform the surgery - mostly on children, in Kigali. This is an expensive operation, and also a most noble one, and we have committed to fund the surgery of opproximately 10 children.
Nothing makes us happier!
The Coffee: sweet flavours of toffee, honey, orange in the cup with a very high amount of complexity and acidity.
